Miles Davis created Sketches of Spain (1960) inspired by the discovery of music with Spanish roots, from Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concerto d’Aranjuez to the expressive universe of flamenco. It was a work that opened Jazz to new sound territories with an intense and deeply poetic vision, which marked a before and after in the opening of Jazz to world music.
Decades later, the Swiss Erik Truffaz, one of the best and most personal trumpeters in Europe with a career characterized by constant innovation, takes up the legacy of Miles Davis from his own perspective. His encounter with Antonio Lizana, one of the most prominent artists of current flamenco-jazz, saxophonist and singer, resulted in the project New Sketches of Spain, a work that revisits that classic from the present and that commemorates the centenary of the birth of Miles Davis in 2026.
Lizana brings an unmistakable stage energy, uniting the flamenco tradition with the freedom of contemporary jazz. Truffaz, for his part, creative and brilliant disciple of his glorious predecessor, proves that he is one of the great European trumpeters.
It will be a concert to celebrate and remember the music of Miles Davis, the Prince of Darkness who found light in the land of Cervantes and García Lorca.
