Philosophy

Mallorca Jazz Sa Pobla

Since its beginnings in the summer of 1995, Mallorca Jazz sa Pobla has grown from a bold initiative born in an inland village of Mallorca into an international jazz reference point. Without a coastline or mass tourism, sa Pobla has always championed culture and live music as a driving force for dynamism and recognition both within and beyond the Island of Mallorca.

The festival’s philosophy is rooted in quality programming with a strong local connection, supporting musicians from the island as well as the international scene. It has evolved from modest concerts with national figures to hosting major names like John Scofield, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Charles Lloyd, Marcus Miller, or Cecile McLorin on the international stage; from the Spanish scene, Chano Domínguez, Pedro Iturralde, Jorge Pardo; and from the Balearic scene, Toni Miranda, Toni Vaquer, Pere Bujosa, among many others. All while maintaining coherence, elegance, and a sense of closeness as its identity markers.

The festival, never confined to a single style, has been a breeding ground for new audiences and emerging talents through its concerts and music seminars. Mallorca Jazz sa Pobla has been, and continues to be, a gateway for both jazz-curious individuals and refined music lovers.

Over thirty years later, Mallorca Jazz sa Pobla remains a space of uninterrupted cultural resistance—a summer meeting point where jazz lives and evolves, staying true to an essence that blends tradition, creativity, and community.

Tributes

Since 2021, Mallorca JAZZ sa Pobla has sought to honor the work and careers of various individuals who have been connected in one way or another to the sa Pobla Festival or to jazz in general. This award reflects the organization’s commitment to valuing people, placing them at the heart of the festival and recognizing their musical and artistic paths. To date, Mallorca Jazz sa Pobla has honored:

  • Miquel Cardell, poet and journalist. 2022.
  • Antoni Miranda, guitarist. 2023.
  • Víctor Uris, harmonica player. 2024.

JAZZDARA

JAZZDARA is a festival within Mallorca Jazz sa Pobla that promotes young talent from the island’s jazz scene. Since 2024, it has taken the form of a small-format gathering aimed at reviving the original spirit of jazz. In a cozy setting, with feet under the table, the audience can experience and enjoy the fresh talent of emerging bands, as well as jam sessions where every note played on stage is born from improvisation.

Seminars / Masterclasses

With nearly twenty years of experience linked to our festival, the Traveling School Playing Jazz has become an essential training and meeting space for musicians from around the world. Over the years, it has offered numerous seminars and masterclasses that have brought together students and professionals from diverse musical styles, all with the same goal: to dive into the melodies, rhythms, and adrenaline of improvisation—the very essence of jazz.

Under the direction of Jimmy Weinstein and Lilly Santon, joined by other esteemed collaborators, more than 300 students have taken part in this transformative experience. Many of them, after attending the school, have returned to the festival as performers in later editions, enriching the program and keeping alive the legacy of this educational initiative that merges learning and creativity in a unique setting.

Exhibitions

The Festival’s organizers are fully aware that jazz is much more than music: it is a connecting thread capable of uniting disciplines, sensibilities, and artistic languages. For this reason, whenever possible, the festival has sought to weave links between music and imagery, establishing dialogues that enhance the audience’s experience and amplify the cultural impact of each edition.

Photography plays a prominent role. Through its snapshots, it captures unique and unrepeatable moments: the spontaneity of an improvisation, the focus of a musician before stepping on stage, or the energy shared with the audience. These images not only document the festival, but also rekindle emotions and preserve its spirit in collective memory.

In various venues across the municipality, these exhibitions accompany and complement the concert nights, turning the festival into a complete cultural experience where sight and sound engage in dialogue, and jazz becomes a meeting point for art in all its forms.
